Slime Heroes Showcases Story, Accessibility Features, and More in 2 New Videos

Slime Heroes art of two slime buddies surrounded by helpful spirits and corrupted slimy beasts

A couple months ago, we shared our impressions of Slime Heroes, a cute Souls-like action RPG coming soon from developer Pancake Games and publisher Whitethorn Games. This colorful and gooey game also made several appearances across several of this month’s game events. The most logical place to start is with the adorable story trailer and summary, which sets up the narrative of Slime Heroes and introduces the corruption that plagues the land.

InΒ Slime Heroes, journey through a whimsical world entrusted to an unlikely hero, a slime, tasked to save it from a mysterious corruption. Explore the expansive 3D world β€” alone or with a friend β€” and encounter ferocious enemies, challenging but approachable puzzles, and uncover forgotten treasures. Gain magical gems throughout the world and dynamically combine them to create unique and powerful magical skills that can take down even the most corrupt minions and bosses. Discover a touching story of overcoming expectations, friendship, and forgiveness as you progress because even slimes can be heroes!

Accessibility in Slime Heroes

One of last week’s events was the Access-Ability Summer Showcase, which as you may guess, was all about highlighting accessible features in upcoming games. While you can view and listen to all the games features on the showcase website β€” in multiple formats β€” here I want to highlight the Slime Heroes one:

Since accessible features vary from game to game, it’s good to see them showcased like this. To summarize, in this trailer we see:

  • Scalable difficulty that adjusts how hard enemies hit.
  • Speed settings to control attack speed and adjust the flow of battle to your liking.
  • Stamina adjustments to control the speed at which stamina recharges.
  • Cursor customization to edit size, opacity, color, and saturation of the in-game cursor.
  • Slime outline colorSlime Heroes generally has a soft color palette, so this adds a white or black outline to help your slime stand out from the background more.
  • An optional double jump to offer a little boost for platforming and exploration.
  • Scalable timing for timed puzzles to give you more time to solve them.
  • Visible hit boxes for your attacks and enemies have a clear visual indicator of attack ranges.

Since Slime Heroes doesn’t yet have a release date, it’s possible this list could change or expand in the future, but so far, they’re baking in a solid and helpful set of accessible features. Whitethorn Games also publishes detailed breakdowns of all accessibility features in their games on their Accessibility page, and while Slime Heroes is not listed yet, you can get an idea of their other games’ features in the meantime.

More Viewing and, oh Yes, a Demo!

I have a few more things to close things out here, but before we get to those, I need to mention that there is a playable demo up on Slime Heroes‘ Steam page right now β€” but it will only be available until June 19th, so get in while you can.

Slime Heroes will be available on PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, Xbox One, and Series X|S.

To wrap up, I wanted to share two final accessibility items: First, if you didn’t catch our chat with Whitethorn Games’ Chief Accessibility Officer Britt Dye from PAX East, please give it a read! It was a brief but insightful conversation about what the publisher does and how they approach helping devs make their games more accessible to more people. Finally, Whitethorn also posted a short, informative video last week titled Whitethorn Games Accessible Game Design Tips that I encourage you (and any aspiring developers!) to check out:
