Explore the Colorful World of Under The Island in New Trailer

Nia wades through shallow water near a cute cabin and swimming hippo in Under The Island

Under The Island, an upcoming action/adventure RPG from developer Slime King Games, debuted a fresh look at gameplay at today’s Guerrilla Collective showcase. Get a peek at the game’s characters, island setting, and lush pixel art graphics in the trailer below!

It’s easy to spot the homage to The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening with the island setting and classic Zelda-esque pixel art, but the developers seem intent on forging a unique path for protagonist Nia and friends. This new trailer offers our best look yet at the interactions between the cast, the combat, island-sinking premise (that I suppose we’d better avoid), and cute critters. Below is Under The Island‘s official synopsis:

Explore a charmingly 90s fantasy world in this 2D action RPG! Save your island home from sinking, and become a hero in the process. Encounter monsters, solve puzzles, and unleash the joy of exploration and discovering secrets. Under the Island celebrates the feeling of self-directed, open adventure, capturing those childhood feelings of hoping to discover hidden secrets and corners of the world as you rummaged around in the backyard as a kid.

While we don’t yet have a release window for Under The Island, it seems to be shaping up nicely. Given that Slime King Games was founded by former Daedelic Entertainment developers — including the art director of the Deponia series — perhaps that isn’t surprising! Stick with us throughout this month’s game events, check out the game’s Steam page, and we will bring you more on Under The Island in the future!

In the meantime, I leave you with some screenshots:
