In 2018, Octopath Traveler launched for Switch before making its way to Microsoft platforms (Windows, Xbox One and Series X|S), and even… Stadia (RIP). Last year, Octopath Traveler II debuted as a multi-platform release. But both games were notably missing support for different platforms. That changes today, as Square Enix has quietly released the first game on PlayStation 4 and 5 for the first time, while adding Xbox and additional Windows support for the sequel.
That means both Octopath Traveler & Octopath Traveler II are available on Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Windows via Steam and the Microsoft Store. In addition, both games are now on Xbox Game Pass and PC Game Pass.
In addition to new platform support, Octopath Traveler II has a brand-new “Extra Battle” mode that unlocks after completing the game. This mode features bonus battles with new opponents, including the cast of the first game! The official statement reads as follows:
To celebrate the OCTOPATH TRAVELER series being available on all current consoles and PC (Windows PC and STEAM®), Team Asano have added a free update to OCTOPATH TRAVELER II, including ‘Extra Battle’ mode which will become available after defeating the final boss in the final chapter. The ‘Extra Battle’ mode lets players test their skills against newly added tough opponents – including the main characters of OCTOPATH TRAVELER. This mode is available on Xbox consoles from launch and has been added to the PS5, PS4 console, Nintendo Switch system, and PC versions today via an update.
Square Enix also shared a fun and gorgeous new piece of artwork by artist Yasushi Hasegawa to celebrate these launches:
Each game is currently offered at a standard $59.99 USD price point, but if you don’t own either, there’s a tempting new offer: Bundles are now available on each platform as well, netting you both games for about $74.99 USD. You’ll find links to each platform’s bundle page below:
You have likely heard praise for one or both of these Team Asano games by now, but I’ll still point you to our Octopath Traveler review by Jono and Zach’s especially glowing Octopath Traveler II review. Unsurprisingly, the latter also took away several awards in our Games of the Year 2023 feature, most notably Best Traditional RPG.
One wonders if these new platforms were meant to be announced later this week during Summer Game Fest (among others), but more platform choices are good for everyone, so you love to see it. We’re only at the beginnings of this season’s big gaming week/weekend, so stick around for more announcements!
